After a two day grind, I’ve finally finished the accounting review, and should now be caught up to where I was supposed to be on 7/20!
Like the Math Review, the Accounting Review is a CD of Flash presentations that cover basic accounting transactions, both journal entry and T-accounts. After introducing those concepts, the review moves on to the Trial Balance, Balance Sheets, Income Statements, Statement of Cash Flows, and a few other standard reports.
However, unlike the Math Review, it would appear that the Accounting CD is a newer vintage of video, which incorporates student interaction through mini-problems. This is a very nice touch, allowing the student to interact with the video, rather than just watch and listen. The presentations are also “intelligent” in that they check your work, and tell you if you got the problem right. Very cool! Here’s a screenshot:
Unfortunately, I suspect that I’ll need to review this CD again, to make sure I’ve got all of the concepts down. The CD itself suggests additional review in the final module, so these concepts must be really important. Of course, to quote one of my classmates ‘I’ve got an absurd amount of reading’ to do before I get to London, so I’ll get back to CD this once my other London pre-reading is completed!
Hey Randy,
Great posts. You and Syed will be glad to have done the accounting review. One thing I always tell people is that the ones who come to the residencies prepared always have the most fun. There are people who think they can cram on the plane, and they always miss out, because they need to cut the social or sleep time out of the week to compensate.
Take care,
Dan
I actually liked the Accounting review more than the Math review. Which is weird, since I always liked math, I guess it's because Accounting concepts are something completely foreign to me, it might also have something to do with the fact that the accounting professors sound a lot more upbeat.
Agreed. I took Accounting as an undergrad, but never really paid attention. So the 'newness' of the material, plus the upbeat tone and mini-games, made it much easier to watch multiple videos in a sitting.
Thanks for visiting Dan! Hope you'll stop back and visit.
I'll definitely take your comments to heart. I had a quick back-and-forth with an alumnus of the Goethe program on his blog (Matt Benson), who basically said the same thing. Work with people who aren't like you (because that's who you really learn from), and go out and socialize as much as possible outside of class. You can't learn networking from a book, and you can sleep when you get home!
