Fuqua Application: A Leader of Consequence, part 2

11 p.m., Sunday night.  No idea what to write.  Need to finish before going to bed.  Want to go to bed.  NEED to go to bed.

After reading the Blair Sheppard Businessworld interview, I STILL had no freakin’ idea what to write about!  I thought about my career-to-date, what I might do after I finished the MBA degree, the loftiest goals I could think of, the loftiest goal I could think of if I wasn’t me…nothing.  So I relied on the most hackneyed approach you can take in writing an essay: The famous quote.

I had to.  There was no other way.  The essay wasn’t going to write itself, and hey, I’m no Shakespeare to begin with.

As the saying goes, “When the United States sneezes, the World catches a cold.”

Ok, so now I had an opening.  A boring, hackneyed opening that doesn’t even hint at answering the question.  Another 15 minutes later:

The current global economic crisis shows that business leaders who do not consider the consequences of their actions will have a profound impact on the global financial system.

A-ha, now I’ve introduced ‘consequence’ into my essay.  The most boring essay in the world.  And it’s Midnight, 24 hours until the deadline, 8 hours until work, and I hope to sleep at some point.  Time to turn up the output, and sort it out later.

Ending the first paragraph, I’ve already wasted my opportunity to catch the reader.  Better start off the second paragraph with a bang.

To say that a leader of consequence only needs to consider the global financial impact of their actions would be short-sighted. The cultural and environmental impacts of business decisions are also of the utmost importance.  Businesses cannot continue to “export” human rights abuses and environmental damage to Third World countries in exchange for cheap labor and consumer goods.

Whoa nelly, did I write that?  I mean, I believe that, but was I reading Rolling Stone earlier in the day?  Where did that come from?  But it’s Midnight, gonna roll with it.

It's definitely one of the toughest essays I've ever had to write. But in the end, one of the most rewarding also.

Thanks for this post. The Leader of Consequence is something that stuck out to me when I attended the info session for their ft program. I was just trying to remember that the other day for a blog post.
