The thing that strikes me most about the Dubai residency to date is the slower pace, a welcome departure from the sprint-marathon of the 1st semester. While the London residency put all of us on notice that we’re not undergraduates any more, at times it was a scramble just to remember what day it was (link)!
In the last few days, we’ve obviously had class, but the biggest difference between the residencies is the number of amazing speakers that we’ve had. From ‘CEO night’ two nights ago, to the Strategic Decisions speaker talking about hedging and derivatives, it’s been much more of a business conference feel than a ‘freshman-away-from-home-for-the-first-time-at-school’ feel. And that’s a good thing I think.
This afternoon (Day 6), there is an implied half-day for those of us who didn’t get a slot on the corporate tour. This is also a welcome change! The bros are talking about hitting Atlantis for a little Aquaventure, and maybe even hitting the ski slopes. And that, my friends, is the essence of Dubai. What the country lacks in long-term history, it makes up for in spades with crazy stories and activities.
