You guys seem to be having entirely too much fun for “school”!! – Mom
Indeed. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end (or at least become tempered somewhat), and thus we started class today. As I’ve apparently made too clear (based on the number of people looking for help already!), I’ve been really looking forward to this semester’s classes, and the professors didn’t disappoint. But easily the funniest/most interesting thing that happened today occurred well before classes started, during orientation.
For each residency, there is a mini-orientation, just to review a little bit about local culture, traditions, and general guidelines to live by. Dubai being a Muslim city/state, some reminders/points need to be made about such activities as drinking, dress in public, greeting strangers, etc. Obviously, we’re not in the U.S., and although that’s pretty obvious no matter where you look, it’s worth a quick reminder. And then, the discussion turned to getting arrested…
Lana, one of several Fuqua staff that spoke, reminded us of some of the taboos and the penalties associated with these infractions. Public affection, public drunkenness, inappropriate dress…all of these can/will be punishable by jail time and there’s no right to a speedy trial. So basically, don’t get arrested. Doesn’t matter where you’re from, your passport won’t save you.
Classmate: But, what if I DO get arrested?
Lana: Don’t tell them you know me!
Hahahaha, and there you have it. Don’t get arrested, Duke can’t/won’t help you. Seriously.
GMI exam tomorrow, along with a full day of classes, a few guest speakers, and an alumni career panel all before 7 p.m. So we’re getting serious, as it should be. But we’ll also be having our Halloween party that was postponed from tonight. We can’t come all this way and not have a little fun. But remember, no matter what you do, you don’t know Lana.
