The beatings will continue until morale improves!

After a long night of making the Black-Scholes model succumb to my every demand, I went to bed with a sad realization:  when I wake up, it’s FINALS WEEK.

Well, I’ve woken up…it’s a beautiful day outside and it’s time for me to go to work, knowing that whatever free time I have in the next week will be dedicated to awkward Finance write-ups, and multiple choice questions testing my ability to think strategically (not sure how that’s going to work).  And of course, who can forget the final consulting report…all due by Monday.  #%$^#&@!

This semester just didn’t pan out like I had hoped; from the easy coast through the Shanghai residency, I was really looking forward to a nice laid back pace going into Spring.  Then the Finance problem sets kicked in, and a case a week for Strategy…well, at least my wife and I got to be on the JumboTron at the Phillies game last Saturday.

If there’s any consolation, I suppose that after I put a banana-monkey beating on the Finance exam, I won’t have to deal with any more problem sets.  Of course, we spent so much time on the PV/FV algebra problems (how can the mid-term be 3 weeks before the final?), by the time we got to options, futures, and forward contracts, there was no time for absorption.  Yay for study time after the semester, since I’m sure I’ll see that stuff again in the future…

Whining aside, next week we’ll be 2/3rds complete with the program, and on our way to St. Petersburg shortly after.  Good luck on the finals everybody!

Lost in the weeds

I’ve got about three hours left on the 8-hour clock for my finance midterm, which is good because I think it will take me only about four hours to finish the last bits. I’m pleased we’re learning all the skills required to perform detailed financial analysis at someone else’s direction, rather than the skills to direct someone else to do it and to figure out what it means, because it provides a nice break from all that stuff in all our other courses.

After today, we have hardly any work left this term:

  • Strategy case, due Saturday May 29th before class
  • Finance assignment #5, due Monday May 31st
  • Finance assignment #6, due Monday June 7th
  • Finance and Strategy final exams, both due Monday June 14th
  • A 20-page Strategy paper, also due Monday June 14th
  • CCL culture dash video, due Wednesday June 16th
  • CCL business analysis paper, due Thursday June 17th

Our Term 5 books should arrive right around then, along with Term 6 registration, as the rock slides down the mountain again.

At least we’re more than halfway done. And I’ve got the Lost finale tonight. I expect it’ll make more sense than finance.
